Guided Kayak Fishing in the Florida Everglades

These guided kayak fishing trips to the Florida Everglades are limited to catch-and-release Fly Anglers only.  Both trips are offered as full day trips only.

I offer two types of trips in the Everglades.

“Everglades Exotics”

These trips are the most productive during the “dry season” when the water levels in the glades do not completely cover vast areas of the grasses.  February through early June is prime time. Fishing is good year-round, but when water levels are lower, the fish are more concentrated.  This is a mixed bag fishery in waters that are 100% fresh.  We target a wide assortment of native and non-native fish.  The native fish are black bass and other members of the sunfish family.  The non-native species include Oscars, Mayan cichlids, tilapia, Midas cichlids, and other aquarium refugees.  We occasionally encounter snook and small tarpon on these excursions.

The cichlids and oscars are like sunfish on steroids; they are strong and will aggressively take both surface and sub-surface flies.  When water lower levels concentrate fish, you’ve had a mediocre day if you only hook 50 fish.  Short casts and small flies make this a perfect fishery to put a major bend in a 4 or 5 wt fly rod.

Best fishing starts in February (also the month to have a shot a real monster black bass), and will go strong until the rainy season gets going in June.  You must have a Florida Freshwater License for this trip.

“Everglades Saltwater”

These waters offer excellent fly fishing year-round.  The areas we fish will have a mix of both freshwater and saltwater species.  Each trip may include a mix of both kayak fishing and shoreline fishing.  Everything is dependent upon Mother Nature; influenced mostly by how much freshwater is in the system, and what the average temperature has been over the last few weeks.  Snook and young tarpon are our primary target species, but on most trips you can expect to encounter some exotics as well.

Fishing is good year-round, but can be tough following cold-fronts.  Mosquito and other critters that chew on your skin can influence your enjoyment of the trip under certain conditions. Casting skill requirements are more challenging on this trip than the “exotics” trip.  An 8 or 9 wt outfit with a floating line will work best on this trip; if you are an advance angler, you can consider a 6 wt. You need a Florida Saltwater License for this trip
